Lydia Huntley Sigourney (n?e Lydia Howard Huntley) was a popular poet and author in the 19th century. Most of her work was written with the goal of inspiring others and centered on subjects of piety and the Christian faith. During the Lyceum movement of the 19th century, many literary clubs were named in her honor. She was committed to education, (including the education of the deaf and the blind) writing, charity, and self-improvement. Her work is being "re-discovered," in a manner of speaking, and the editor offers Mrs. Sigourney's collection of mini-biographies of outstanding women throughout history. Some are royalty, some are of humble origins; but all are inspirational. These "good and great" women should not be forgotten by the modern reader. This makes a very nice gift book.
