At their best, essays can be both entertaining and substantive while still retaining brevity and compactness. In fact, the easiest way to absorb a point is in small doses, and to laugh while it's being ingested! Laughter is here in abundance, although the collection of essays seems to close all too soon. The short chapters in Carol Green's new book Gold Pans and Iron Skillets, offer light-hearted reflections on events from throughout her life. As one of seven children--five sisters and a brother--who were the offspring of a gold-miner father and a mother who could make a fabulous meal from "nothing," Carol experienced the idyllic moments that we would have liked to share back when...and are only too happy to join vicariously through the sunny pages of this little book. In fact, as we proceed through childhood reminiscences of riding a "motorcycle" that is actually a fallen tree trunk, shucking down to skivvies to enjoy a cool dip in the pond (and of course get caught en dishabille), or taking axe to the old red rooster prior to a chicken-and-dumpling suppertime, we readers find ourselves in that blurry area of wondering if these things didn't happen to us ourselves rather than only to Ms. Green. The wonderment continues as she adds memories from her teenage years, college, marriage, and motherhood. We can be fairly certain that we did not experience exactly these moments...but we COULD have--or at least something very similar to them. The interplay of uniqueness and universalism keeps the reader engaged from cover to cover. Gold Pans and Iron Skillets is a fun book that makes the reader feel as if he or she has read something worthwhile as well, as it leaves something to remember and ponder upon in virtually every essay. It will make a great gift book for any age and gender.
