Treat Yourself

This is a wonderful book filled with important information, ideas and suggestions backed up by the kind of thorough, careful research for which Sharon and Craig Ramey are well-known and respected. It's also clearly written and enjoyable. I truly believe that parents owe it to their young kids (and themselves!) to read this insightful, practical guide.

Great book!

A friend gave this book to my daughter who has three children. She liked it so much, she gave it to me to read. Although we no longer have young children, I was so impressed by the book and the practical information it provided. Its divisions are very clear, and it offers easy to follow tips and suggestions.

A Real Gem

This is a terrific book that's filled with practical information. I really appreciated the Rameys' approach of using research findings to show what matters and what doesn't in preparing my daughter for kindergarten. The chapter on "Ten Hallmarks of Children Who Succeed in School" was a gem, explaining what I can do to give my daughter a real edge in her education. This is a no-nonsense book with loads of useful advice.

Ideas and advice for raising children

This book by the Ramey's is actually third in a series of books about raising children, from infants through school age. The book is very clearly written and provides many good ideas for helping parents to relate well to their children as well as helping children adjust to changes in their lives, such as starting school. The authors provide research examples to verify the things that they recommend and my husband and I have found all three books to be very helpful and fun to read.

Landmark book for parents concerned about academic success

Using research information from their own in-depth National Transition to School Demonstration Project and other sources, the team of Sharon Ramey, Ph.D., and Craig Ramey, Ph.D., have again scored with an important work for parents of young children who are concerned that their children get the best possible start in school. This is a handbook for parents covering many issues and aspects of development as they relate to school readiness and performance. It was written for parents of children ages 3 to 8, so even if your child has already started school, there is valuable information in this book for you.As in their recent landmark book on infant development, Right From Birth, the Rameys offer informed suggestions backed up by research and organized in a very usable handbook style for parents of children about to enter formal schooling from preschool to the early elementary grades. Topics such as how children learn and how family life, and particularly their parents, can and do influence success in school, are addressed and explained in a non-clinical way. The importance of parental involvement in the critical early years is demonstrated. Understanding how children develop and supporting that is the surest way to help your child achieve the success you want for him. The Rameys explain all this and then offer the specifics for helping you make the most of your child's school experience. There are sections on parental involvement with the school, homework, learning disabilities, discipline, and many other topics related to the school experience. If you are a parent who is concerned about your child's academic success and want to know more about how you can help ensure it, this is a must read for you. My own children are 2 and 5, and I feel this book couldn't have come at a better time for us. I highly recommend this work for all parents of young children who understand the critical difference they can and do make in their child's future success, both in school and subsequently in life.
