I've been a mental health professional for nearly 40 years, and have practiced some of my own self-defeating behaviors over the years. Drs. Greg and Lori Boothroyd provide an accessible, easy-to-use, practical guide to helping people rid themselves of self-defeating behavior. A wonderful book that I have begun using in my own practice. I recommend it to everyone! George Polley, MSW, LICSW

"Goin' Home" was recently revised and expanded by author Gregory Boothroyd with the assistance of his wife Lori Boothroyd. The new title is "Going Home: A Postive Emotional Guide to Promoting Life Generating Behaviors". While retaining the simplicity, clarity and humor of the first book, Going Home adds much needed direction in the areas of relational defeating behaviors, substance abuse and psychic gardening, while also integrating the emerging fields of positive psychology and personal coaching.

If you have a self-defeating behavior of any kind, meaning anything you do with enough of a pattern that it lowers your quality of life overall -- eating, gambling, smoking, bad relationship choices, controlling behavior, passivity, whatever, you name it -- this book will teach you how you got this way, why you haven't been able to shake it despite knowing better, and how to free yourself once and for all. It's a fun, easy read that can change your life; you really can't imagine how valuable an addition to your thinking this book will be. The force for change is the 12-step written exercise that Dr. Boothroyd has developed and which is included in detail in the book. This exercise may be a good do-it-yourself project for those who are particularly psychologically minded; in general, doing this work with the support of a quality therapist can help you make a good thing even better. Don't be fooled by the small size of the book, or be put off by its "out of print" designation -- there is an amazing amount of wisdom, learning and love hidden within its covers. A treasure not to be overlooked.
