Going Down South Summary
Going Down South is a story about the road trips Allyson and her parents would take to Washington, North Carolina and Savannah, Georgia from the South Bronx during the summers of her childhood. Allyson shares her fondest memories about how her parents prepared for their trips and the common events that would occur during those road trips. Allyson affectionately gives an account of how her relatives made the visits so memorable for her.
Biography
Allyson Wingston was born and raised in the South Bronx for the first 15 years of her life.
During that time, she was educated at Winifred Wheeler Nursery School, P.S. 154, I.S. 183, and Morris Annex H.S. Allyson had the good fortune of having teachers who inspired her to become a teacher. She entered the field of teaching in the fall after she graduated from Hampton University. Two years later, she received her Master's Degree in education from Queens College. Allyson became a career teacher who has taught on every level of public school education. She was inspired to write Going Down South while teaching one of her 4th grade classes's at East Clayton Elementary School. As a children's book author, she plans to write more relatable stories for children.
