Biblical Holiness Examined

Horatius Bonar the 19th century Scotish Minister is probably more well known for his hymns than for his books. The books he has written are as doctrinally sound and as edifying as his outstanding hymns such as: Not What My Hands Have Done,Thy Works Not Mine O Christ and A Few More Years Shall Roll. No matter how many good books on Holiness one has read there are always some observations, in addition to the writers perspective or emphasis on some aspects of this Biblical teaching ,that stand out.In chapter four 'Strength Against Sin' the authors emphasis is that forgiveness of sin is not only indispensable to a holy life but provides power and motivation that nothing else can. If the root of true holiness is 'Peace with God'and one of its motivating and powerful components is being forgiven by God,then that makes it crystal clear that being in a right relationship with the Lord is the foundation from which all true holy living must stem. Mr.Bonar makes a clear distinction between justification and sanctification, holiness belonging to the latter but not possible without the former. His putting forth of this distinction is with kindness and gentleness(without compromising truth)He writes in Chapter five 'The Cross and Its Power' "Before I can live a Christian life,I must be a Christian man... If I am to live as a son of God,I must be a Son and I must know it.Here many fail. They try to live like sons in order to make themselves sons..." One thing that sets 'Gods Way Of Holiness'apart from many other books on this teaching is Bonars repeated emphasis(though stated in many different ways)on the necessity of being reconcilled to God before any real holy living is possible. The author gives a sound refutation to those who believe the apostle Paul is speaking in Romans Chap.7 as an unregenerate man.He also dismantles 'the old man,new man theory'(those who take the old man,new man statements as being literal as opposed to being figurative). This is a very fine and Biblically rock solid treatise on 'Biblical Holiness'.

Classic treatment of an often misunderstood concept

Horatius Bonar is a "Marrow Man" through and through as he tackles an often misunderstood concept of how a Christian is to pursue holiness of life. Bonar recognizes that striving for holiness without the proper motivation will always result in mixed obedience and frustration on the one hand or a self-righteous legalism on the other. Only the love of God in Christ, experientially known, can truly motivate the sinful heart to pursue holiness with "fear and trembling." This book is exceptional and should be read by every pastor who ever wondered why his congregation lacked a zeal for Christ-likeness.
