God's Place in the Universe: Desires, Disagreements, and Data

We value supernatural accounts, relying on faith to choose among rival revelations. Thus, the Bible describes an omniscient, omnipotent God creating heaven, earth, and its inhabitants, including Adam crafted in His image. Scientific approaches, however, focus on natural substances operating through natural mechanisms and provide accurate, concise, comprehensive, and fruitful accounts: noting Earth revolving around the Sun, an ordinary star in an ordinary galaxy; life originating through spontaneous chemical reactions that generated self-replicating systems; and haphazard evolution of all inhabitants by Darwinian natural selection, including Homo sapiens. Notably absent is any hint of souls or cosmic intent. Scientific proposals refute literalist readings of the Bible and fail to satisfy human cravings for sanctity and significance. Compromises include coupling natural mechanisms with supernatural notions. But such intertwinings reflect human temperaments, not reason or evidence.
