Gods of Deception: Ancient Technology in Sacred Temples

Bys: Caputo, Chuck and Guevara, Eddie

The temple doors opened without a touch. A chariot appeared to float before a god. A mechanical figure seemed to think for itself. What was really happening behind the spectacle?

In Gods of Deception: Ancient Technology in Sacred Temples, Eddie Guevara and magician and inventor Chuck Caputo explore the ingenious devices, concealed mechanisms, and carefully staged performances that made the impossible appear real.

Journey into a world of fire-powered temple doors, mysterious vessels, speaking figures, and ancient accounts of seemingly supernatural wonders. Discover how air pressure, water, counterweights, hidden operators, and the audience's own expectations could turn a mechanical effect into an unforgettable experience.

The story continues into the workshops and theaters of later magicians, where mechanical marvels took on new lives. Meet the celebrated chess-playing Turk, explore Robert-Houdin's inventive magic, examine Houdini's battles with fraudulent spiritualists, and follow the Indian rope trick into the fascinating territory where publicity, memory, and legend meet.

Inside this illustrated book, you'll discover:

- Ancient apparatus explained through accessible descriptions and diagrams.
- The stories behind famous wonders-and the limits of the surviving evidence.
- How performers controlled what audiences could see, hear, and inspect.
- Photographs of Chuck Caputo's own miniature temple, Pastry Chef, and Turk.
- The connections between ancient spectacle, theatrical illusion, and the enduring power of suggestion.

Drawing on Chuck Caputo's extensive practical knowledge of magic and Eddie Guevara's dedicated historical research, this House of the Unusual(TM) publication brings the machinery behind the mystery into view. Documented designs, historical allegations, and modern reconstructions are clearly distinguished, allowing readers to appreciate the ingenuity without mistaking every legend for fact.

For lovers of magic, automatons, ancient history, and mechanical curiosities, Gods of Deception offers a compelling look behind the curtain.

The wonder is real. The explanation may be even more astonishing.
