Goddess of Clouds personifies the protagonist, Yun. She transforms from being the Goddess of Wu Gorge (associated with free sexual love) to becoming the Goddess of the Clouds (symbolizing the harmony of soul, sex, and love). The novel consists of five parts: "Searching for the Music of the Soul" portrays the passionate encounter between two professors on a California campus. It delves into the protagonist's inner conflicts as she grapples with friendship, love, and self-identity. In "On the Wings", Yun embarks on quixotic yet promising adventures in America, attempting to disentangle herself from a puritanical Chinese past. In "An Ugly Duckling's Swan Song", Yun faces culture shocks, agonies, and setbacks as a graduate student on American campuses. Her rebellious childhood in China, marked by her father's role as a figure of communist authority and traditional patriarchy, is also revealed. In "Sex Love?", Yun, akin to a female Don Juan, explores the path to spiritual liberation by disentangling sex from love. Finally, in "A Separate Utopia", Yun undergoes purgation amidst the clash of East-West values, ultimately merging with the Goddess of the Clouds.
