Thiruppavai is a garland of thirty pasurams (devotional hymns) sung by Godadevi in the original Dravidian language, praising Vishnu. It is an important part of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, composed by the twelve Alwars, and holds a special place in Tamil literature. In India, during the Dhanurmasam (Sagittarius) month, there is a tradition where unmarried young women sing songs, beseeching Godadevi (Andal) to grant them a good husband. This is known as Katyayani Vratam. Thiruppavai Vratam belongs to the same category. Andal believed that in the Dwapara Yuga, the Gopis (cowherd women) observed this very vratam, desiring Lord Krishna as their husband. Sri Vaishnavites recite these pasurams daily in their homes and temples throughout the year. However, the songs sung during Dhanurmasam have a special significance. Each pasuram is sung on a specific day. Thiruppavai lays down certain Vaishnava Dharma (righteous conduct) rules that Sri Vaishnavites should follow during Dhanurmasam. Sri Vaishnavites across the country sing these hymns, seeking divine grace, peace, and prosperity. Andal, along with her companions, undertakes a rigorous thirty-day vratam, singing the Thiruppavai, in order to attain Lord Krishna as her husband.
