God Save the Queen's Accountant

By: Winslow, Veronica

In 1838, a clerical error made Karl Marx the Queen's accountant.

London is wrapped in fog the colour of weak tea, and Karl Marx needs a job. He applies to be a municipal accounting assistant. Through an error of truly imperial proportions, he is appointed Royal Accountant to the young Queen Victoria instead.

Victoria wants to know where the money goes. Marx wants to know why nobody has ever asked. Together they open the royal ledgers, and the kingdom will never balance the same way again.

Within a season, the Treasury clerks have taken up red ink. The palace seamstresses have reformed the corset. The corgis have formed a union and vote on Tuesdays. A Ministry of Irony has been founded to file the consequences. And the Duke of Strathclyde, appalled by all of it, has declared a free-market casino republic on the Isle of Dogs, complete with a roulette-wheel election and a very well-fed president.

But somewhere in the ledgers, between the ceremonial wigs and the horse feed, there are thirty thousand pounds. The question is not whether a queen and a revolutionary can balance the books. It is whether they can agree on what the money is for, and what each of them is willing to give up to spend it.

God Save the Queen's Accountant is a comic novel of corsets, corgis, and creative accounting: sharp, warm, gloriously absurd, and with a heart that lands when the jokes stop.

Second edition, revised: restructured in five acts, retold, and copyedited throughout, with a new ending.
