God for President: A Parable about the Power of Love

The fate of the world is at stake, so God is running for president in Lisa Venable's delightful parable. Sarah Rose, a disillusioned American activist, has retreated from Washington politics to her hometown in Minnesota to work for a friend at the Heavenly Hair Salon. Sarah has essentially given up on God, but one day is provoked by a conversation between customers at the salon about the state of the world and she begins to wonder what God would do as president of the free world. Sarah exclaims, Imagine it...people would think twice before they act. Laws would be made with love. The water would be clean again. The fighting and wars would cease. God would never allow these atrocities Out of nowhere, a mysterious, dazzling woman drops into Sarah's life and recruits her to help in a run for the Oval Office. Torn by her desire for a better world and her anger with U.S. politics, Sarah tries desperately to resist the woman's magnetism and call to help her country in the name of love. God for President offers a poignant reminder that listening to each other may get us farther along than shouting, that no one person or party may have the corner on right and the American way. Plus, 10 Messages from Love -- ultimate truths and how to implement them in our lives. Message #1: Be the Love You Wish to See. What would love say? What would love do? Each of the ten messages ends with these questions and a Love Practice. We've been living in fear. It's time to join the Love Campaign.

Unique POV

Many people are not interested in reading non-fiction books by the spiritual leaders of our time, or any other time for that matter. So the wisdom voices of the ages found in Gandhi, Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson, Buddha, Wayne Dyer, Echart Tolle, Mohammad and Jesus are heard by relatively few individuals. But while few may be interested in an esoteric philosophic approach to spirituality, many lives can be touched in deep and profound ways through the power of storytelling. God for President by Lisa Venable carries the timbre of those voices in a simple story that assimilates the teachings of our greatest teachers in an easy-to-digest package that hopefully will be read by many. There is no doubt that our world would be a better place if we embraced the message of love in this book. Venable is telling us the earth has become very small indeed, much too small for our current we/they--"my way, or the highway" approach to life. As long as individuals and nations set themselves up as more deserving than, better than, smarter than, closer to God than--the world will continue to experience more and more turmoil. There is simply too much against-ness built in to our current belief system for us to live on this small planet in peace. Lisa Venable clearly carries the anecdote to this tired and unsuccessful behavior in God for President. I wish her great success, believing with all my heart that our future depends on our ability to integrate this vision into all our lives. This is a great message but, unfortunately, not a great book. In fairness to author Venable, it is very difficult to write good allegory. The author's approach, especially at the beginning, seems somewhat heavy-handed. Still, I'm hoping for a Jonathan Livingston Seagull phenomenon--a book that was roundly disparaged by critics and universally accepted by the public. Armchair Interviews says: Hard to disagree with the message.

What Would Love Do?

A deceptively easy-to-read book that is full of Great Spiritual Truths. God for President gives us a view of what it might look like if Love were at the heart of public policy and the ground of our politics. While much of the action is within the context of a presidential campaign, the book itself is not political but rather comes from a universal, spiritual perspective. An appendix offers ten ways that each of us can choose love rather than fear in our daily lives starting with "Be the Love you wish to see." The book closes with an invitation to join the author's Love Campaign. My partner and I have given the book to many friends and keep thinking of more we want to share it with.

Timely!

After reading God for President, I cannot think of politics in the same way. In particular, Mary Love has stayed with me, and actually continues to provide me with inspiration. I find myself thinking, "What would Mary do or say in this situation?" and the answers come to me as if she's stepped out of the book and into my life!

A Sweet and Inspiring Story!!

I am so glad I ran across this book. It's a sweet and engaging story, set in a little Minnesota town, a story about everyday people and a mysterious Mary Poppins-like character who runs for President. This is a warm and feel-good book which inspired me to look at politics with new eyes.

Love 4 President 2008

We can really use what this is about. I am so tired of the 'old' politics or fear and irrelevancy and am totally ready for a new way. This book is well written and should be an inspiration to all candidates and voters.
