The story is loosely based on a book, “Incident at Muc Wa: A Story of the Vietnam War” by Daniel Ford. It takes place in 1964, in the early days of South Vietnam. This was filmed in Valencia, California, USA. The reason for the movie title is revealed in the movie.
This is an excellent vehicle for Burt Lancaster.
I do not know how real this is, as it plays out similar to “M*A*S*H” (1970), but I can tell you that when I was there, 1967-1968, I got amebic dysentery and was surprised to see it in the movie at 51 minutes in. I was also amused by the mosquito counters. I was in charge of dispensing the “Monday Pill,” a controversial anti-malaria drug. I had to get signatures to prove they took it. In the movie, they had a nice latrine with a cover. I was given a shovel and a handful of toilet paper and told to go outside the perimeter.
