Tailor welded blanks are sheets of steel where a number of different grades and thicknesses of steel have been pre-welded together before pressing and shaping so that each section of a component contains exactly the right grade of steel for its purpose. Before tailor welded blanks were developed, each part of a component had to be manufactured separately and then welded together. The concept of combining various steel options into a welded blank was developed to enable product and manufacturing engineers to tailor the blank so that steel?s best properties were located precisely within the part where they were needed.
