Great study of how the European Union was formed and what role it will play in the world

This book does an excellent job of showing how the early years of the European Union were shaped. The alliance is mostly built upon an economic partnership that is represented in the original six members. It did not take long for that list to grow to nine and the alliance between neutral European countries eventually merged into the European Union. Although some are still independent the EU does represented a large market and politically rivals the United States. One of the draw backs to this book is that it is solely pro European. It does take an attitude that the EU can do no wrong. It is written before some of the major fragmentations occurred so when reading it is important to remember that it is a dated book. Despite those two drawbacks it is really one of the best pieces on how the EU came together and what role it should play politically. It does go around the world outlining various partnerships with different regions and assessing where the EU should go from here. For those starting out and wanting to learn about the European Union this is a great book.
