Drustan's fame eventually brings him to the Colosseum in Rome, under the gaze of the paranoid Emperor Claudius. While Drustan seeks only survival and a way to free Ciaran, he is drawn into a web of conspiracies. He rejects an offer to join a slave rebellion, wishing to avoid another massacre, but is falsely implicated in an assassination plot regardless. Arrested and condemned, Drustan faces the ultimate cruelty: he is forced to fight Ciaran in the arena. Refusing to kill his brother, Drustan orchestrates a sacrifice that spares Ciaran but forces him into a final, doomed duel against Rome's greatest champion, Rutilius Maximus. Drustan dies not as a slave, but as a warrior, fulfilling the prophecy by sparking a legend of defiance that transcends death.
