The spotlight on women's athletics has never been brighter as girls continue to enter school and community sports programs in skyrocketing numbers. Girls Rule is a tribute to the phenomenal competitors who paved the way for this golden age in women's athletics.Girls Rule chronicles the outstanding achievements and lasting impact of some of the world's greatest female sports figures. Authors Rappoport and Wilner explore the role played by these groundbreaking athletes -- individually and collectively -- in their respective sports. Over 100 full-color photos accompany compelling profiles that celebrate such sports legends as Sonja Henie, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Mia Hamm, and Chris Evert. Girls Rule offers a long deserved look at the critical moments and people that shaped the world of women's sports.Rappoport and Wilner's first book, They Changed the Game, a chronicle of sports pioneers in the 20th century, was published by Andrews McMeel in the fall of 1999.
Book provides a good look at popular sports and women athletes. It puts women's achievement in perspective based on the time period, as well as the athletic achievement of the event. It covers some of the great women's sporting events familar to most readers (i.e. World Cup Victory), but also tells the story of lesser known athletes and events. Book covers many of popular sports, but does not have any stories on less popular sports, such as field hockey or volleyball. This was an easy read and provided many "feel good" moments through remembering/reliving some of my favorite athletic contests and athletes.
