At a boarding school high in the mountains along the Nile in Rwanda, the students are primarily Hutu girls from wealthy upper-class families, with a small number of Tutsi girls also included due to strict quotas. The mountain path leading to the school from the capital winds endlessly through a labyrinth of valleys and hills, seemingly without end. Then, unexpectedly, the path spirals up Mount Ikibila, reaching its destination. Perched atop the mountain, it appears to the young girls like a magnificent palace, shimmering with their unattainable dreams. The girls secretly exchange stories about their first menstruation, discuss celebrity pictures, seek mysterious potions from witch doctors, and even dare to venture into the jungle to visit gorillas... But beneath the laughter and tranquility, riots are looming over the valley and across Rwanda.
