Young Will McDavey plans to leave Texas to go to California with his girlfriend right after their high school graduation night but she never shows up for the rendezvous. Years later Will is now the sheriff and an old car, same model as that the girlfriend drove, is found submerged in a creek. There are two sets of skeletal remains in the car, one of which could be hers. Meanwhile another car is found with a dead body behind the wheel at a rest stop but there is no identification on the body, the car has been wiped down to remove finger prints, and the car keys are missing. And the Feds are looking for suitcases that were supposed to be in the trunk of the car.
