This fourth Macduff Brooks mystery opens with Macduff and his fianc e Lucinda peacefully reading the newspapers at breakfast at Macduff's Montana cabin. One story in the New York Times is about a body of someone Macduff knows found wrapped in a fishing gill net hanging from a channel marker near Sanibel, Florida. The next day, while fishing near the Montana cabin, the couple discovers another body wrapped in a gill net, also a person Macduff knows. Will there be more? Is Macduff involved?

At the same time Macduff is under pressure from Washington, D.C. to undertake a mission in Khartoum, dangerous enough to cause Lucinda to leave him and return to her investment banking job in Manhattan. Much of the action takes place in Florida, especially St. Augustine and the small Gulf Coast town of Oyster Bay.
