A handy guide that goes out of its way to document each statue and the stories behind them.
Giants in the Park is a thorough dive into the statues that dot Chicago's Lincoln Park. As one who frequents the trails in Lincoln Park, I often found myself questioning the stories behind each statue. Giants in the Park answers those questions and more.
Krista August does an in-depth dive into what each statue represents and the stories behind the benefactors and sculptors. Some tidbits of information are found when reading about how each statue came to be. Her writing is concise, intriguing, and expressive. The illustrations are a well-appreciated visual guide as well.
August also goes above and beyond by examining missing statues and some landmarks in the appendix. This was especially enjoyed.
Even though the book came out in 2011, I found it quite up-to-date and accurate. The only flaw I found was the Charitas statue which was rededicated in 2015.
4.5/5. Rounded to 5. August's research shines through. Her eloquent yet concise writing keeps each chapter informative and fun to read.
