The Speaker of the House is the most important leader in the US. House of Representatives. They are chosen by the House members at the start of each new Congress and have always been a member of the majority party. The House votes until someone gets a majority of votes. The Constitution says the House shall choose their Speaker, but it does not require the Speaker to be a current member, though every Speaker so far has.

The role began in 1789 with the first Speaker of the House, Frederick Muhlenberg; . the current Speaker, Mike Johnson, is the 56th Speaker of the US House of Representatives, having taken office on 25 October 2023. He is a member of the Republican Party and represents Louisiana's 4th congressional district.

Michael Johnson is second in line, should something happen to cause President Donald J. Trump not be able to finish his term. .
