Book Overview

Ghosts. Unearthly presences. Things that go bump in the night. St. Augustine, America's oldest city, has them all. The unique and often turbulent history of the Ancient City has spawned more than four hundred years' worth of shadowy figures of the dark hours. Come walk through misty, cobblestone streets, down shaded alleys, along the wall of the old stone fort. Smell the smoke of ancient fires, the musty corners of old houses, the garlic and olive oil of Majorcan kitchens. Listen to the tinkling of wine glasses long shattered, the strum of Spanish guitars long broken, and the laughter of a dozen foreign tongues long dead. Awaken to the midnight howling of the city's prowling cats; seek sleep between nightmares lulled by the lapping waters of the Matanzas Bay-named for the massacre of the French Huguenots by the Spanish here in 1565. Author Dave Lapham has collected twenty-four stories from St. Augustine's rich oral history into a light, yet sometimes hair-raising peek at the spooky side of the Oldest City.

Ghostd of St Augustine

Fascinating read. Now, I want to visit St Augustine again. Keep up the good work, Dave!

One Bore doesn't ruin the Boo.

I really enjoyed this book. I recently went to St. Augustine and enjoyed one of the ghost tours there so I knew I had to have this book. The story of 'The Gallant Governor' is my only complaint. This story wasn't spooky or scary at all. It was just plain silly and if anything could make one think all the other stories are a bunch of rubbish. The two main characters in the story are ridiculous. It's very very bad. But the other stories are excellent. 'Toques Place' and 'Ghost Tour' are great. They give you chills and will make you wonder what that noise was in the other room. I loved this book and look forward to reading the second volume.

Boo

The only way to describe this book is - great! It is easy reading with many small unrelated ghost stories. I have found that my son and kids in his grade also enjoy the book. I really recommend this book, especially if you are planning a trip to St. Augustine.

Excellent book

I am completly satisfied with this book! It's so interesting. It goes along perfectly with the ghost tour that I went on in St. Augustine. It has stories of Flagler college which I am putting an application into. Nice job on this book!

A perfect complement to the historic ambience of this city

After taking the wonderful nighttime walking "Ghost" tour of the nation's oldest city last year, I was disappointed to find that there was no written volume documenting these stories, despite the availability of many books of local historical flavor. Imagine my surprise and excitement when this new volume was published! A well written and FUN collection of stories, mostly of seemingly harmless or friendly entities, with only a smattering of evil or sinister happenings. The author's own review listed here is very unbiased and sincere, including the age range . Enjoyable for adults and all but the youngest children!
