"Ghazals To Allah" by Alisher Navoiy is a collection of English translations of ghazals by the great fifteenth century Timurid poet. Navoiy introduced Persianate poetics to the old Turkic language Chagatai T rki and remains the greatest poet in that language. The religious dimension of his work often has the metaphorical ambiguity characteristic of the ghazal tradition, but he also wrote ghazals in which he addresses God directly, as Allah or Lord. This is a selection of these ghazals. They show Navoiy at his most overtly religious, in the imagery he uses, as well as the directness of his address. The translations are by English poet Andrew Staniland, with the help of students from Uzbekistan State University Of World Languages.
