Getty's Elephants

I am an artist with a tale to tell, not a writer. Yet for thirty years I told and retold the same tale about the 2000-year-old elephant that broke my leg.I had hoped someone would write down the story. I did not know how to write.Some years ago the poet Jim Moore listened to my oral recitation. I told him that I hoped someone might put it on paper. He asked me to repeat the tale. I did and he once more listened. Then he said, "Write down, word-for-word, what comes out of your mouth". The result was Getty's Elephants, the one and only story I would ever write down, or so I expected.
