Getting over John Doe: A Story of Love, Heartache, and Surviving With Style

Is there anything worse than being in love with someone who -- suddenly, out of the blue, with no reason at all -- stops loving you back?

Here is a remedy for that all-too-familiar chapter in every girl's life: getting dumped.

It's not really Ben & Jerry's that soothes the sting -- or getting even -- though that certainly helps. Rather, it's learning to lose him and respect yourself that puts you on the path to sanity-and gives you some Zen with men.

In this quirky romantic comedy of errors, Suzy Yalof tells her John Doe story from the pitch "open -- minded, smart, funny" to sex, the L-word, and the big dump (a subzero day on a chairlift) to finally getting over John Doe (Hint: Do the things he always hated). Like all of us, Suzy Yalof has survived the exaltation, embarrassment, and disappointment of romance. But with the realization that for every frog there is a prince, she's rebounded with style. Hers is an exemplary story of a woman scorned -- and then inspired.

Every woman who has ever loved and lost and then gone on to exhaust her mom, her pals, and the neighborhood bartender with her John Doe story will find a well of unconditional empathy in Getting Over John Doe. It is a love lesson for our time -- and far more titillating than dating John ever was.

I Love This Book!

This book has helped me much more than any one ever has. If you have ever been dumped by someone that you thought was the "one," this book is definatley for you to read. Two years ago, I broke up with a person that meant more to me than any one ever has and it was the hardest thing that i ever had to do. But when i picked up this book one day at a local bookestore, it impacted my life in the most positive way. I learned that i had to grow from this experience instead of wallowing in my own self pity. Thank you Suzanne for writing such a fabulous book!

better than prozac

This book was absolutely wonderful. It's for anyone who was dumped by the guy who they thought was different but proved to be ''just like all the rest''. I was stuck in such a rut before discovering this book. It's nice to know that someone shared such a similar experience and survived with such style. It is an incredably uplifting book and everytime I find myself feeling down I pick it up and read it again. Thank you Suzanne!

funny--and poignant--read

i picked this book up for friend who was just given the heave-ho...but ended up having to buy her another copy because i wanted to keep this great read for myself. not just funny and witty--love the bracelet anecdote and mom's golf analogy--but also surprisingly moving and powerful.

I'm out of my funk and back into life!

Thanks, thanks, and thanks again to Suzanne Yalof for this hysterically funny, and surprisingly helpful book. It is, in so many ways, the story of MY life. For weeks my friends have been telling me to "just get over him" but not until I read John Doe did I understand what I had to do. Spurred on by Yalof's advice, I realized it wasn't my fault (as she says, there are just a lot of frogs out there) and so I tore up his photos, triple pierced my ears (he had forbidden me to do it) and set out to rent a movie and have one last good cry. And guess who I met at the video store? Prince Charming! No kidding! A message to my fellow "dumpees": Read this very funny book. It will change your life!

Wow!! A how-to for getting over men with style and humor!

I loved this book!! Suzy Yalof writes a sure-fire hit about getting over a man with sympathy and humor. It is the perfect book for a friend who won't take your advice and needs to learn the hard way or for yourself if you just can't stop dwelling on your own John Doe. Ms. Yalof gives great pointers for getting over Mr. Wrong from Don't Drink and Dial to Doing All the Things He Always Hated. Suzanne Yalof helps any woman get over "him" with laughter, style and preserved dignity. I truly enjoyed this amusing "dish."
