In a word, delightful. Yes, that's the perfect word to describe Martha Alston's novel, a funny and engaging tale of the escapades of Anita and Maisie, sisters living in Small Town, USA. What makes this book so unique is the touching, almost maternal feelings that Anita has for her younger, spirited sister. Desirous to get Maisie married, Anita will resort to almost anything, even enlisting the help of a prisoner. The unique cast of characters from Uncle Vint to Marie Caroline who weave themselves in and out of the sisters' lives are quite memorable and well, inimitable. Another two pluses of the novel are the author's gift for dialogue and her scene descriptions. From the opening sentence describing Maisie leaning over the kitchen sink with her nose pressed against the window, I was captured. It conjured up a line from Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory," a classic short story. Does Anita succeed in getting Maisie married? You'll have to read the book for yourself to find out. I'm just hoping that Ms. Alston writes a sequel and brings Anita back to the South where she belongs.
