Get the Hell Out is a true story of rare insight into dysfunctional/alcoholic behavior causing the self-destruction of the family, and one man's miraculous recovery.
Smith looks at his life, with its blessings and challenges, with a great deal of tenderness and wit. The family pictures, so often absent in memoirs, add immensely to understanding the culture that gave, and took away, so many gifts from the sometimes aluring and always intriguing people who populate his book. It has a message about survival and healing. But don't let that put you off. It is filled with fun.
this is a wonderful book, very helpful and an enjoyable read

I was wonderfully surprised at how clear and direct Mr. Smith was in writing this very personal and touching book. His message is very poignant and can reach anyone who has grown up in a family. In his case it was a very well to do family, one I found interesting to read about. His ability to convey what a child understands or takes from a situation that may not have been intended is amazing. He is also able to convey a very trying upbringing without undue blame on anyone, his understanding of his family and each of their own struggle gives this book credibility. He does not wallow on being a victim but rather finds strength in repeated struggles to claim a hold on hope and love.
