Gerty and Gus Become Friends is a story about friendship, written to help children with their social skills. While on their adventure, Gerty introduces Gus to her friend, Lulu. Gus wonders what a friend is, so he asks. Gerty defines a friend using words such as loyal, trustworthy, supportive, respectful, and polite. Using Gerty's definition and explanation of friend, Gus realizes that he fits the description, and he and Gerty become friends; however, he knows that the two are different in many ways. Can they still be friends? Gerty answers this question by reassuring Gus that friends may share similarities and differences. A poem is provided to remind children what it means to be a friend. The book also contains resources for parents and teachers to assist children who have trouble meeting other people and making friends.
