Book Overview

'No one can get past the German soldier.' - Adolf Hitler
For the first three years of World War II the German Army was a fearsome offensive organization, capable of subduing countries in a matter of weeks. Even as the war neared its end, individual German soldiers earned great respect from their Allied opponents for their defensive capabilities and their willingness to fight hard to the end. The German Soldier in World War II uses rare and previously unseen photographs to show the reader what life was like for the German soldier in the front line during World War II. Whether a tank crewman, panzergrenadier, motorcyclist or artilleryman, every German soldier had their own viewpoint in combat and the photographs in this book reflect that, showing how they fought together, often overcoming unpromising odds or better-equipped enemies. The book includes images of the Waffen-SS in action, and depicts combat from both the Western and Eastern fronts. The German Soldier in World War II is a graphic portrait of the life of the private soldier in the army of the Third Reich, containing first-hand accounts from German Army veterans who served in the war. This book is for anyone interested in the history of World War II and the Third Reich.

Outstanding in Every Way!

Very nicely written account of the BEST soldier in WWII, IMHO anyhow! Each Heer branch is detailed along with the SS and the various theaters of operation. I would recommend this book to any student of the WWII soldat!

A superb overview of the German army.

I purchased this book to get an overview of the Wehrmacht in order to further my research on the subject. This book answered the mail and described all aspects of the German Army as promised. The attention to detail on even minute subjects was impressive as were many of the excellent wartime photos. After reading this work, I had a much better understanding of the German Army and had a 'feel' for what it must have been to be a German 'landser'. Overall, an excellent, thorough product.

Good Overview

This is an easy to read book with many tidbits of the experiences of German soldiers during WWII. Clearly the authors have read several biographies such as "Soldat" and compiled this overview sprinkled with tidbits from those biographies. If you lack the time to read a dozen biographies this book will give you a quick impression of the German military with the focus on the individual soldier. Even as a serious researcher of World War II history, I found this to be an enjoyable easy read.

Everything you wanted to know about a german soldier....but

I found the book to be an extremely detailed account about life in the german army. Not only does it clear up a lot of doubts, it also touches a lot of subjects hitherto unknown to most of us, such as the us of artillery within the framework of the german army; the structure of all branches of the wehrmacht is explained in easy to digest terms.Even the most trivial elements of german military life are touched such as recreation, pay, leave and a lot of other elements that will shed some light on the individual german soldier. It is a pity that the authors (as always) must show their prejudice for axis soldiers. I must object to their expression that the most coveted medals were reserved for officers; this is ridiculous and unfounded as german war records show opposite. The thing is that it wasn't easy to get the commendations for these awards since the requirements were very rigorous. Still the book offers a very fascinating insight on a seldom touched topic.I have received quite a few E-mails from people that have failed to include theirs so I can answer them. So please include it so I can get back to you. My E-mail is wserrano@irppr.com. I did serve in the axis forces but not in the german armed forces. I served with the 250 Spanish division with army group north. At the present I am working on a book that will definitely shed some light on the war from the german side.
