This is a scholarly study of the civilian underground (Kreisau Circle)that developed against Hitler and the Nazis. There are details of "lost" chances to stop Hitler, which were relayed to the British and the Americans by German officials, all of which were ignored. In the nightmare of the Nazi era, some Germans gave their lives in resisting, ignoring the fact that they didn't have a prayer' chance. The difference in the philosophical views of the West Germans and the former "East" Germans are as obvious in the pre-war period as they are still today.
