German and India: From Historical Encounters to Strategic Partnership

This book examines the historical and contemporary relationship between India and Germany, tracing its development from early intellectual and cultural encounters in the nineteenth century to the strategic partnership of the twenty-first century. It brings together historical, diplomatic, economic and strategic perspectives to provide a comprehensive account of how two nations with very different historical trajectories have built a relationship grounded in mutual respect, shared democratic values and expanding cooperation.

The book is organized in six parts, moving chronologically from the earliest intellectual exchanges between German scholars and Indian civilization, through the political complexities of the colonial period, to the establishment of formal diplomatic relations in 1951, and finally to the multidimensional strategic partnership that has emerged in the twenty-first century. Each chapter combines historical narrative with contemporary analysis, situating specific events and developments within their broader international context.

Particular attention is given to the intellectual foundations of the relationship, including German Indology and Sanskrit scholarship; to the post-war reconstruction of ties between the two countries under Jawaharlal Nehru and Konrad Adenauer; to the growth of economic, scientific and educational cooperation; and to the emergence, since 2000, of a formal strategic partnership encompassing defence, technology, climate action and the Indo-Pacific. The book gives particular attention to the consolidation and expansion of this partnership under successive Indian governments, including the significant deepening of strategic, technological, and economic cooperation during the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside the contributions of earlier leaderships in laying the diplomatic and institutional foundations of the relationship. The book concludes with an assessment of the relationship on the occasion of its seventy-fifth anniversary in 2026 and its prospects for the future.

This is a work of academic history and contemporary policy analysis. It draws on published scholarship, official government sources and publicly available diplomatic records. Historically sensitive subjects are treated critically and objectively, in keeping with established academic practice, and the book does not seek to advance the position of any government, institution or political actor. In examining the roles of successive Indian leaderships, the book seeks to present a balanced account of political continuity and change, without privileging the contribution of any single leader or administration over another.
