Geriatric Care in Ayurveda - Preventive Aspect

Ageing is a process of physical, psychological and social change in multi-dimensional aspects. "Elderly" was once defined as being age 65 or above, but the growing number of active and healthy older people has caused that definition to expand to "young old" (65 to 75), "old old" (75 to 85), and "oldest old" (85 and beyond). The over-85 age group is the one that is growing most rapidly. The term Geriatrics is made by union of two Greek words, first geras (old age) + iatrike (medical treatment); thus the study of all aspects of aging, including physiological, pathological, psychological, economical and sociological problems is termed as geriatrics, their synonym is gerontology. While term aging means growing old or maturing, and these are the progressive changes in human body and mind related to passage of time. There is no any precise method for determining the rate or degree of aging. Aging is an inevitable physiological process, why senile changes - occur in the body-mind system, is not yet clear.
