George Julian Harney was one of the half-dozen most important Chartist leaders. Born in 1817, he had been the youngest member of the first Chartist Convention, editor of the Northern Star in the 1840s, and the friend of Marx and Engels who published the first English translation of the Communist Manifesto in his Red Republican. Almost everyone will be astonished to discover that not only did he live until as late as 1897, but that in the 1890s he was producing a weekly column for the Newcastle Weekly Chronicle. His articles are superbly written, politically challenging, and vigorously polymathic, ranging across literature, contemporary politics and world history of all periods, with intriguing - and often unexpected -recollections of Chartism. This is the first selection of Harney's journalism to be published. Indeed it is his first book of any type. Readers are going to be surprised by both its quality and Harney's opinions. Book jacket.
