Book Overview

Gertrude Stein's "Geography and Plays" is a landmark collection showcasing her groundbreaking contributions to American modernist literature. This volume gathers a diverse array of Stein's experimental fiction, dramatic pieces, and insightful essays, offering a comprehensive glimpse into her innovative style and unique perspective.

Exploring themes of place, identity, and the very nature of language, Stein challenges conventional narrative structures and invites readers to engage with her work on a deeply intellectual and sensory level. The "Plays" included demonstrate her avant-garde approach to theater, while the essays reveal the critical framework underpinning her artistic vision. A vital text for anyone interested in experimental fiction and the development of modernism, "Geography and Plays" remains a powerful and influential exploration of the possibilities of literary expression. This edition makes Stein's seminal work accessible for study and enjoyment.

Miracle year

Of the three great books published 1922/23--Ulysses, The Wasteland, and Geography and Plays--I rate Stein's work the highest. It is a bit daunting at first, though you will probably be amused at least by the wit on every page. But for experiments in poetry, plays, and prose, it by far outstrips Joyce and Eliot. The one essential modernist work. So advanced it is actually postmodernist in its approach to its audience, including, as it does, echoes of what is happening now around her so as to achieve a release from time and to become essentially timeless. Try it and see. This is a great investment. The first edition in four separate bindings is worth seeking out, though Stein tends to be pricey. But just read it in any edition. You'll love it.
