Many avenues are being explored to further improve wheat yields. Conventional plant breeding will remain the procedure used to incorporate new capabilities into commercial cultivars. Control of diseases through genetic means will remain an important thrust because the old disease organisms mutate to more virulent strains and because new diseases can arise at any time. New biological techniques may allow the introduction of yet unknown genes into breeding stocks. Also, greater understanding of the genetic and physiological makeup of wheat will allow crop and soil scientists to devise ingenious ways to alter the wheat plant to make it an even more important food factory. This special publication, Genetic Improvement in Yield of Wheat, addresses specific research thrusts in wheat improvement. The papers were originally presented as part of a symposium at the Annual Meetings of the American Society of Agronomy-Crop Science Society of America.
