Generation Y, also known as "the Millennials," are defined as people born between the years of 1981 and 1996. They are considered to be more liberal, more accepting of immigration, ethnicity, and diversity than any previous generation. They are commonly less involved in organized religion, less strict about clothing, trends and fads, and about one-third of them have permanent body decorations such as tattoos and piercings. There are more versions of the family than ever before with single parent homes being common. Fewer couples are marrying but remain committed to co-parenting even when not sharing a home. Most Gen Y's are children of Babyboomers and will be parents of Generation Alpha. Statistics at the time showed that more than half of new recruits were "military brats" or following in the footsteps of someone they admired and consequently, would not want to disappoint. The social aspects of growing up in a military family give them a much clearer view of what to expect going into Basic Training, and what their life will be like. They are not expecting to mirror civilian life. The following chapters tell the story of seven soldiers, each born between 1981 and 1996, each old enough to remember where they were when 9-11 occurred and each one a hero. They were military dependents, Millennials, and sons and daughters. They served with honor and distinction, representing Generation Y.
