"General Sam Houston and Mahboobali the Cat" is such a fun, adventurous book and I believe that it would appeal to any elementary age child especially a fourth grader when studying Texas history. It may even be a fun and informative book for a junior high age student when they do a more in depth study of Texas. This is a historical fiction containing fun, talking animals and their adventures and even a talking, moving General Houston statue. It also contains a good amount of facts about General Sam Houston and his life including the Battle of San Jacinto and a little about the Alamo and other Texas heroes. This book in a fun but informative way humanizes Houston and shows that although he did have some faults, he basically did so much good for Texas that he is a legitimate Texas hero. I got the idea for this book because of my cat Mahboobali, Boo for short who was actually one of a litter of kittens born under the Sam Houston Statue and Tourist Center porch. The beginning of the book tells all about this true story.
