The French-Amerindian defeat of a numerically superior force on 9 July 1755 on the Monongahela at what we have chosen to call the Battle of the Wilderness ranks as one of the all-time worst catastrophes to befall the British army. It was a prelude to the victories of the American colonists who, twenty years later, fought to establish American independence. It demonstrated the superiority of riflemen in the American militias over formal armies when fighting in the wilderness.
