Gaviota Beginnings traces the three generations of Californios beginning with Sean Michael O'Shea, who settles in the upstart community of Santa Barbara following his flight from the mountains north of Dublin. Sean Michael's narrative quickly becomes the narrative of his son, Sean Miguel Lopez O'Shea, and finally ends with the story of Miguel Lopez O'Shea. Each in his turn helps us to understand both the joys and sorrows of the continuing strife that early Californios faced in this battleground of a central coast.
