Gathering

Gathering is the opening novel in The Brotherhood, a warm-hearted, humorous, and deeply human story about a loose network of middle-aged men who all carry the same, life-altering mark: a cancer diagnosis.

Told through short, vivid scenes and sharply drawn dialogue, the novel follows men who meet in garages, conservatories, caf s, and backyards-spaces where engines hum, jokes fly, and honesty appears in unexpected flashes. They kick tyres, restore old cars, tease each other, hide their fears, and slowly reveal the truths that shape them.

At the center stands Monty, the fast-talking ex-truck driver from Vesterbro, and the Merchant, a lifelong shopkeeper from the Danish west coast whose practical wisdom and quiet loyalty hold the group together. Through laughter, irritation, memories, and unexpected confessions, we see how masculine identity can be both armour and vulnerability.

The story becomes particularly charged when they meet Johnny, a strong-willed contractor with lung cancer whose explosive temper masks a profound loneliness. As Monty and the Merchant try to help him-and his struggling family-we witness how unspoken grief, pride, and fear can tear people apart, yet also become the starting point for healing.

Behind the humour lies a deeper philosophical layer. Inspired by S ren Kierkegaard's reflections on the "sickness unto death", the novel explores what happens when men confront their own mortality, their relationships, and the roles they have lived in for decades. The narrative balances levity and depth, showing how friendship and shared struggle can spark courage in the most unlikely places.

Gathering is ultimately a novel about masculine integrity, emotional, and the quiet heroism found in everyday life. It is tender, funny, tragic-and surprisingly hopeful.
