"...Love is infinite, as the stars have no number and the sea no rest. Their love was not of this world. They knew nothing except great love for each other. It was all they had, and they didn't want anything else." The Magician fell silent, looking at distant mountains veiled in the blue mist of a dying day. And from that far-away mountain country, or maybe from that ancient realm where unearthly love had once bloomed, a flock of birds flew in, as if greeting the Magician, the birds landed silently on top of the bowing tree, just above where the men stood. "Beautiful story," Grant said. "Tragic love." "Love does not care for time or order; it is beyond the law. Death cannot stop true love. It can only delay it for a while." The Magician turned to Grant. "They are coming back to earth, Layla and Majnun," he said simply. "Your grandson was Majnun in his past life." "But I don't have children," Grant protested. "Soon, a daughter will be born to you." The Magician smiled. "She will have a son, Michael. He'll become a great artist, even like Nicholas Roerich." Grant listened in respectful silence. "Tell Michael the story of Layla and Majnun before you leave this world. He will be old enough to understand it." The birds were gone with a clatter of wings. For a moment, Gant watched them flying away, soaring, melting in darkening skies. "Will my grandson be a happy man in this life?" Grant asked, hopefully. His eyes half-closed, the Magician was silent for a long moment. "Love is the strongest and deepest element in the entire universe," he said with great significance. "Love is life itself - the freest, the most powerful molder of human destiny. There is no greater force than the force of love. True love believes it may, and can, do all things." He turned to Grant. "Michael's tragic love will help him solve the mystery of death."
