Gary Paulsen is an American author of children's books. He has published over 100 books, which have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide and been translated into more than twenty languages. His most famous book is called Hatchet, which tells the story of 13-year-old Brian Robeson who survives in the Canadian wilderness for 47 days after his plane crashes near a lake. It won the Newbery Medal in 1987 and became one of America's best-selling young adult paperbacks ever with 2 million copies in print to date. Paulsen has been called "the king of survival."
After the release of Hatchet, Paulsen was approached by young readers for advice on how to survive difficult situations. He became an expert in surviving and making things such as shelters, fires, and ropes. These skills proved useful when he served as a ranger with the National Park Service during his younger days. His other works include The Foxman, Brian's Winter, and Brian's Return.
