Anne Dorrance, author of “Green Cargoes,” writes of not exotic orangeries as the Orangerie, Karlsaue, Wilhelmshohe, Cassel, i.e., Kassel, Hesse-Nassau, Germany. But of a more intimate greenhouse in the hills of Pennsylvania.
The book comes with directions or hand-drawn diagrams of greenhouse design and maintenance. There are practical stories of dos and don’ts about setting up a greenhouse.
We need to take into consideration the materials of the time. This is a 1935 book. There is an Alphabet of Flowers section that helps describe different plants in alphabetical order. It helps if you are familiar with a few of them in advance. Chapter 9 is the Ann Dorrance that I am familiar with, as she describes the history and proliferation of greenhouses.
