My thanks go out to Herman "Hank" Rosen for writing this book. My grandpa was one of the Navy guards on board the SS John Drayton and was on the life boat with Mr. Rosen. My grandpa never talked much about his experience in WWII, so it was very helpful to me and my family to be able to read and fill in some of the very difficult details of his ordeal. After I read the book, I was able to correspond with Mr. Rosen via email and then over a phone call where he told me more about my grandpa and the experience they shared. My thanks go out to all who have served our country. This book is well-written and a great piece of history from WWII. I highly recommend it!

dredged from watery depths

The tension builds in this gripping true account of the journeys of a Liberty ship and its men during WWII. The prose is sparse and clean and it reads like a ship's log, with lots of attention to detail. We get a feel for the routine of shipboard life, and when it comes crashing apart, we are as disoriented as the crew. We also can sense the author/narrator's wonder and joy of working with these men on this ship.
