Galactic Gunboats: Chapters I to XIV

This book contains Chapters I to XIV of Galactic Gunboats. It is a classical science fiction story with hyperspace travel, starships, several alien species, a good amount of amazing technology, and several more of the commonly so much enjoyed ingredients. Time travel and inter-species relations of the intimate kind were omitted, but lots of tech talk and a good deal of politics pepper the story. Avoiding the trappings of the often-annoying permanent superlative, Galactic Gunboats is told from the perspective of an enlisted ship engineer serving with the human space fleet. While there is action in the story, and in total a lot of it, much text is devoted character development and to the relations between the characters. What personal interests they have and their motivations are told in some detail and their reactions to the environment which they are exposed to are described with credibility. Thankfully, neither Mary Sue nor Marty Stu make an appearance in this book. Instead, the characters of 'real life' of a kind who, though being fiction, could be taken from reality. Their adventures, though going to the limits, are such as actual people could experience. In terms of hyperspace navigation and large elements of the technology described, the fictional part of science fiction is been made liberal use of, though regularly with the concept that the laws of physics as we know them are respected. The fictional technology is of a kind that is not known to be impossible, thus getting close to strictly hard science fiction. While Galactic Gunboats contains a lot of that tech talk, this science and engineering part of the story serves well as the credible background for the main character, who is serving as an enlisted starship engineer. Other elements of the story include values like friendship and their betrayal by people who chose to be selfish in the face of danger.
