Dr. Kate is a present day Veterinarian facing the rocky transition from dedicated student to passionate practitioner. Her academic life had been stellar, until the people that supposedly love her shatter her life and decimate her personal and professional self-confidence. On the first day of her internship, Kate has no money, no support system, no ability to trust anyone and she's starting the hardest and most pivotal year in her professional life. Kate is tested by her patients, her cohorts, her clients, and her mentors, but in time she discovers their friendship and profound support. On her beloved ER rotation, a con woman manipulates them all, tells vicious lies about Kate, and then threatens to sue: all to avoid paying her bill. An abusive man breaks the cat's leg and, although injured herself, the wife won't leave her husband because the domestic violence shelter won't take her cat. And the nicest client in the practice, who treats his pets perfectly and Kate and her staff with kindness and respect? Dr. Kate can do nothing to help his adorable dog because cancer is ravaging her body and making her every breath a battle. Her housemates, including the uniquely gorgeous but unrelentingly mysterious Dagger, are her sanctuary, but she can't trust or accept overt help from anyone. When she rescues a severely injured fuzzy brown puppy, who shows Kate only love and trust despite his recent torture, it somehow cracks her hard earned protective barrier and opens her up to receive the love and support she richly deserves. Even then she doesn't learn Dagger's real name, which seems fair because her name isn't really Kate.
