Imagine that one day you walk out your front door and the world you expected to see has changed. In fact it is identical to the previous world in every respect except for one-it does not match your expectations. It is at this point that you realize that not only did those expectations help shape the world you lived in, but that they also determined who you, the person living in it, were. If the world has changed, then what has happened to the you who was living in that world? If you have become someone else by the simple act of walking out your front door, what has become of that other you? The novels included in this collection are, if not answers, at least versions of this question which change with your own expectations, so that each time you come to suspect that that person is coming back into view, a new reading might cast doubt on who it was you were looking for in the first place. And while there can be no proof of such a thesis, these stories are arguments for the idea that there are in fact many worlds, and each of us must be many people in order to live in them. While we are not always successful in those acts of living, we are not relieved of the responsibility of trying merely by the inevitability of dying. Indeed, this seems only to increase the urgency or our task.
