The soild component of earth is called lithosphere. It consists viz. crust, mantle, outer core and inner core (Figure A). The crust is the outermost solid layer of the earth. It is composed of different kinds of rocks, which as a whole, has the density and composition of granite. Hence the layer lining the continents floor is called as granite layer.
