Book Overview

"I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger . . ." writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up "1922," the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

In "Big Driver," a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book-club engagement. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face-to-face with another stranger: the one inside herself.

"Fair Extension," the shortest of these tales, is perhaps the nastiest and certainly the funniest. Making a deal with the devil not only saves Dave Streeter from a fatal cancer but provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment.

When her husband of more than twenty years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. It's a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends a good marriage.

Like Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight, which generated such enduring films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, Full Dark, No Stars proves Stephen King a master of the long story form.

So terrifying!

Great stories in here I recommend to read it.

Excited

Received a very nice copy. Can’t wait to read.

His short stories are more amazing than his novels!

I always thought I would not like Stephen King's stories, based upon the movies made from them. I was first talked into reading Duma Key, which was a real "feel good" novel, based around strange occurrences. I was then told to try Stephen King's short stories, and I am seeing that in almost every one of his stories, the good guys always win, the bad guys get what's coming to them, and there is almost always a positive message that comes from the ending. Yes, some are a little weird, but usually a "good weird"!

Love it!

Love it.

Spooky Short Stories

I purchased this book because I wanted to watch the Netflix movie 1922, but wanted the full story beforehand. The first short story in the collection is 1922 and it is definitely detailed and scary! The other stories, Big driver, fair extension and A good marriage are great as well.

Amazing!

I loved each short story that Stephen King put into this book. Though the first one was a little slow to get off the ground, I could NOT put it down. You won't regret buying this one. I promise.

It's been quite a week for Stephen King with the releases of both It Chapter 2, the movie and his new novel, The Institute. But then again, with about 80 books and dozens of hit movies to his name, maybe it's just like any other workweek. In any case, we're superfans and wanted to showcase a few of our top picks from the versatile author. (Psst, it's not all horror)
